Sonic the Hedgehog First Impressions

Yesterday 3 new iPod games were released, Peggle, Bomberman, and Sonic the Hedgehog. Being the huge Sonic fan that I am I decided to grab the game as soon as I found out it was available.

I’m not going to be doing a full review of the game because practically everyone should know about Sonic the Hedgehog by now, if not go ahead and do a Google search and you’ll find something. Instead I will talk about how well it translates to the iPod.

The long and short is that it doesn’t translate very well. The controls are a little clunky it is really difficult to jump on to small platforms and the screen is so small that I find myself running into enemies because I just can’t see them (this could have also been a problem with the Sega Genesis version but it seems much more difficult on the iPod).

I wasn’t able to get very far in the game because of the clunky controls but I think if one was able to get past the controls it isn’t really that bad of a game. I’m playing it on my 60GB 5G iPod and occasionally the game will skip a little bit but it could just be because I’m using the older iPod.

By no means does this mean that I’m not going to stop playing it, the controls are incredibly frustrating and I run into enemies every five seconds but I think I’ll end up getting the hang of it and the game may end up being quite fun, but that is a very difficult hill to climb over.

I’m not sure if it is really worth $4.99 but Apple doesn’t allow for variable pricing on iPod games so I guess we’ll have to do with the slightly over priced game. All I can say is: “I wish I bought Peggle.”
