Amazon Releases the Kindle

Yup, the Amazon Kindle. Who cares? I don’t really know. It’s a nice eBook reader that allows you to purchase books wirelessly with EVDO and it also allows you to read blogs and newspapers. Oh, and the EVDO is free.

I don’t think that this is particularly a stupid idea, what I think is stupid about it is that it costs $399. I know that there are a lot of people out there that would be willing to pay that much for this device but I don’t know any of them. I think that $299 would be a much better price point.

You can check out a nice video of the kindle here.

There are some things that aren’t explained in this video that I think you should know about:

  • The eBooks on the device are DRM protected (.AZW) but the device does support unprotected mobipocket books, text files, html, and word documents. Some of the files can be transfered by USB although some of them have to be emailed to the device.
  • The device does have a brower, although it is experimental.
  • The device can playback Audible audiobooks but they cannot be downloaded through the Kindles EVDO connection, they must be transfered to the device over USB.
  • Blog subscriptions cost $2 a month with a 14 day free trial. But, you could also browse to the blog through the basic web browser for free. (You are paying for the ability to use RSS)

If you want to purchase one for yourself you can do so here.

Oh, here is another video of the Kindle:
