Sun Microsystems releases “fastest microprocessor on the planet”

Sun Microsystems will be releasing a new microprocessor later today called the Niagara 2 (aka Ultrasparc 2).  Sun’s CEO Jonathan Schwartz will be there to show the processor off.

The chip has 8-cores each manipulating 8 threads for a total of 64 threads per cycle. The chip runs at 1.4GHz.

Not only is it supposed to be the fastest microprocessor in the planet but it is also supposed to be one of the most power efficient processors in the world. It is great to see more power efficient processors, some of the power bills of these huge data centers are unbelievable. If we can cut power and improve speed and efficiency it will be good for everyone.
