Apple iPod MacBook MacBook Pro Rumor

Lower Priced MacBooks and MacBook Pros with the Possibility of Cheaper iPod Touchs

At Apple’s earnings call it was mentioned that Apple would be having a product transition soon and that it would have to lower margins because of it.

That of course caused a wildfire in the blogosphere with speculation of everything from a Mac tablet to cheaper notebooks.

The two possibilities that make the most sense is that Apple could be releasing sub-$1000 notebooks. Piper Jaffray said Tuesday that there is an 80% chance that Apple will introduced redesigned MacBooks and maybe even MacBook Pros at the $999 price point for the MacBook and $1799 for the MacBook Pro.

But, this product transition could be a cheaper iPod Touch which would transition the iPod product line from the old click-wheel style iPods to the new touch models. If the iPod Touch was priced at $199 it would be much more comparable to the iPhone 3G and really the only differences being GPS, Bluetooth, integrated speakers, and the GSM radio.

I’ve thought for a while about the possibility that Apple would drop the price of the iPod Touch and integrate GPS into it as well and then releasing a turn-by-turn application for the TouchOS. This would essentially turn the iPod Touch into a navigation system as well as an iPod and internet tablet.

iPhone 2.0 To Have Over The Air Firmware Upgrade And FM Tuner Support

Users who have used the latest iPhone 3G firmware say that the device will have support for over the air firmware upgrades and FM radio support of some kind.

The FM radio support means that the new firmware would let iPhone users use the iPod Radio Remote along with other accessories that will let users listen to regular FM radio with their iPhones. Currently the iPhone and iPod Touch are incompatible with the radio remote.

Firmware over the air means that Apple or AT&T would be able to push firmware updates to iPhone users, theoretically to help fight against users of jailbroken and unlocked iPhones.

iPhone Software 2.0 Going Gold Friday

According to Gizmodo’s “sources inside of Cupertino,” the iPhone software update that was originally supposed to be released in late June and then later was set to release in early July may be going gold on Friday.

Gizmodo says “keep in mind that this date is tentative,” which basically means that if it doesn’t happen Gizmodo can still say that things may have changed since they got this information (it’s something predictors do to keep themselves from looking like fools when it turns out to be wrong, I’m not saying this is what they’re doing but it does seem like that).

Even if it goes gold on Friday I don’t expect to see it released to the masses until early next month, notnecessarily July 11 but in July for sure.

Remember now, that back on June 11, the Apple Australia website said that the App Store was going to launch on June 27 (this Friday), just something to keep in mind when you read Gizmodo’s post.

AT&T Subsidizing the iPhone $325

A recent analyst note from Opeenheimer claims that AT&T is subsidizing the iPhone $325, this is how Apple was able to reach such a low price on the iPhone 3G ($199 for 8GB and $299 for 16GB).

This isn’t too far fetched, since AT&T was previously doing a revenue share deal with Apple monthly for each iPhone subscriber it wouldn’t be surprising that Apple would want to get that money up front instead.

On top of the $325 the analyst also said that AT&T is giving Apple $100 for each iPhone 3G sold at an Apple store, as commission.

This seems about right to me, since AT&T isn’t giving Apple money monthly anymore I’m sure in the exclusivity agreement some sort of revenue sharing was mandatory but it seems like AT&T is getting the short end of the stick. From everything that I’ve seen the iPhone is only costing Apple $100 to manufacture now, which means they are making profit all over the place, from the App Store, from the iTunes Store, from the actual sale of the phone, and from AT&T. And yet, what is AT&T left with, I guess the right to say that they have the coolest phone on the block.

iPhone Firmware 2.0 May Be Released June 27 (Update)

Update: According to Apple the App Store is still coming on July 11.

No one has mentioned any hard dates yet as to when firmware 2.0 will be released for the iPhone and iPod Touch. But, Apple may have inadvertently leaked the date with an image appearing on the Australian iPod Touch Features pages.

The image above can be found here and clearly states June 27 as the availability date, this contradicts the “early July” that was mentioned in the keynote.

It’s a shame that Apple can’t get it out any earlier, I’m sure every iPod Touch and iPhone owner can’t wait to get their hands on some of the apps for the devices.

As an aside, I just received a $50 iTunes gift card for my birthday and it is probably going to be primarily spent on iPhone apps, so hopefully I’ll be doing some reviews of the more interesting games. Expect those reviews shortly after the App Store launches.

More Supposed Leaked 3G iPhone Shots

I don’t want to spend too much time on this because I don’t believe that these pictures are actually real. It shouldn’t take too long to find out, cease and decist letters should start flying this morning, if they don’t, then one would assume it is fake.

Reasons I believe it’s fake:

  • Strange choice of icon next to Carlos Rodriguez’s name.
  • Speaker placement on the bottom of the phone doesn’t look like it is pointing down, instead looks like it is pointing back, one of the big things Steve mentioned about speaker phone on the iPhone is the fact that it doesn’t get muffled when you place your phone on your desk.
  • No lock button on top of Product (RED) phone.
  • Why would Apple need to build iChat for Windows? especially when iChat is already compatible with AIM.

WWDC ’08 Rumor Roundup

I’m not going to spend a lot of time on these rumors because I don’t really believe a lot of them, so instead I’m going to link to information about them.

(after each rumor I’ll say believe if I believe it, I may contradict myself, when you click through, but what is listed here is what I believe now, my views may have changed since I wrote the post)

iPhone Apps Available on Monday

“A source at a software company that has been working on a native iPhone application tells us the company is getting ready to launch that application on Monday, which could also imply that Apple’s App Store will be up and running that day.” –Tom Krazit, Cnet

The App Store is (from all we know) the only way to get legitimate iPhone and iPod Touch applications on devices. But, another interesting thing is that many rumor sites are expecting the 3G iPhone 2.0 to be ready on Monday as well.

The 3G iPhone is expected to have GPS and, of course, 3G cellular networking.

I don’t know what to think about all of this, if we don’t see the new iPhone with firmware 2.0 we will certainly see it shortly afterward. It’s a strange situation in which it sure seems like there isn’t anything that could happen at WWDC that someone hadn’t already predicted. It seems that Apple dealing with all of the cellular carriers has opened up a huge crack in the unleaking ship that it Apple Inc. It seems that now there are too many points at which information on new iPhone developments could leak out of the company to bloggers or other news outlets.

I do think we will probably at least get a glimpse of the new 3G iPhone and hopefully we will also get to update our current iPhones to 2.0 but other than that I think it will be a relatively boring keynote (it was a little hard to say, but I said it).

Full Palm Treo 850 Specs

On my Tumblr blog I posted about The Boy Genius Report getting a hold of some pictures of the Palm Treo 850, but now TamsPPC has found out what the full specs of the Treo 850 are.

  • GSM, EDGE, and UMTS HSDPA 3.6
  • assisted GPS receiver
  • 802.11b/g
  • 320×320 touchscreen
  • microSD slot
  • 2 megapixel camera
  • 1500mAh battery
  • micro-USB for both power and sync
  • Bluetooth 2.0 EDR + A2DP
  • 256MB NAND-Flash (~175MB for user)
  • 32MB of SDRAM
  • Windows Mobile Pro 6.1

For someone who is still a big Treo fan or can’t stand to lose the physical keyboard this looks like it is going to be a great option. But, unless you absolutely need the physical keyboard I don’t know why I would suggest this to anyone.

I hate to be the one who is always comparing new phones to the iPhone (although I know I’m not the ONLY one) but at this point it’s hard not to.

3G iPhone coming on June 9th, Says Gizmodo

“sources close to the 3G iPHone launch have told Gizmodo that Apple will announce their new model at the WWDC Keynote on June 9th. The second-generation iPhone will be available worldwide right after the launch.” –Gizmodo

That is a pretty bold statement but I have to be honest, I believe it. It is clear that Apple is going to release a 3G iPhone, it is the next step in cellular technology for them, the only question was when, and Gizmodo just answered the question.

Some other things mentioned in the post though is that in Spain the new iPhone will be available on June 18th at the grand opening of Telefonica’s megastore availability of the phone would come to other stores shortly after that (in Spain). This seems a little weird to me, I can’t recall a time where Apple released a product only at one location and then made it available in other locations later, I don’t know, it just seems strange.

Gizmodo also stated that the 3G iPhone will no longer be available at a fixed price point, and to me, that means nothing, unless it means that you could purchase the iPhone without a contract for a higher price, which is possible. They also say that the launch will bring new sales policies. I don’t know what more Apple could do with the sales policies they currently have, you can’t purchase with cash and there’s only one phone per customer at Apple stores.

This launch was inevitable and it makes sense for Steve Jobs to announce this at the keynote, it is relative to developers.

Apple Wants iTunes Purchases Over Cellular Network For Next iPhone

As you may already know the current iPhone is only capable of purchasing music from its iTunes Music store application when you are connected to a Wifi network. Well, Apple is in talks that would allow them to sell music to iPhone owners over the 3G data network as well.

The New York Times is reporting that to convince the record labels Apple may have to pay them more than 70% of the revenue from it.

Apple is also looking to expand the number of songs that are able to be converted into ringtones, they are also planning on adding ringback tones to the available options.

These talks seem to be very early on so it is unlikely that Apple would sign the deal in time for them to be announced on June 9th, but these announcements aren’t really the kind of thing that Apple would talk about at WWDC anyway. It is more likely however that Apple would announce a new iPhone with 3G networking and have a special event a month or so later to talk about these features and officially release them to the public.

Spyshots of Palm Treo 800w

Oh yes, that is a picture of the yet to be announced Palm Treo 800w. This new phone from Palm is expected to run Windows Mobile 6.1 on a 400MHz processor, 128MB of RAM, and have 256MB of flash memory. There are also rumors that this device will have feature EVDO Rev. A, GPS, and Wifi.

One last mention is that the device has a micro USB connection instead of Palms previous proprietary connector.

The phone overall is pretty good looking in my opinion and although I don’t like Windows Mobile smartphones because I hate the operating system, the hardware is incredibly nice.
