Apple has indeed licensed ActiveSync which will allow the iPhone to have full Microsoft Exchange support. It hasn’t been announced yet when the software update will come down the pipe but it will give the iPhone support for the following:

  • Push contacts
  • Global address list
  • Cisco IPsec VPN
  • Authentication and certs
  • Enterprise class WiFi (WPA2 / 802.1x)
  • Security policies
  • Enterprise configuration tools
  • Remote wipe

That means that the iPhone will basically have as good if not better support for Exchange than Blackberry users have. With the iPhone you don’t have to go through a bunch of servers to get your data, ActiveSync allows the iPhone to communicate directly with the Exchange server.

And the sound of a million Blackberry’s being bashed against the ground could be heard from the highest mountain tops.
